AAVI - Packaging Design

Brief: To create a sustainable eco-friendly packaging design for a dish.

The Dish: Kozhukatta is a sweet dish, very well known in the southern states of India like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It is made of rice, coconut, jaggery and cardamom powder.
The Process: The biggest challenge in the process was to actually make the dish and to understand what are the elements needed for this packaging to not just make it work in the short term but to also be a sustainable one. Coconut is one of the main ingredients used in the making of the dish. Once the dish is made, the shell of the coconut is often thrown away to waste. So the idea was to use the coconut shell as the packaging of the dish and let Kozhukatta be cooked within the coconut itself by making gaps in the lower areas of the coconut so that the dish can recieve the steam required for cooking. Hence the name Aavi meaning "steam in Malayalam.
The Packaging: The interesting aspect about this project was to come up with innovative ways to use materials which are specifically eco-friendly. We used materials such as red wax, jute string, gateway paper and the coconut shell. The Typographic Logo style is more flowy as to represent the flow of steam(air). The strings and the red wax play a crucial part in keeping the gateway paper attached to the coconut.
